Spanish actress Verónica Echegui, best known for roles on the Apple TV+ series Love You to Death and the Netflix show Intimacy, has died at the age of 42 following a secret battle with cancer, Variety reported citing the local media outlet El País.
Echegui was reportedly undergoing cancer treatment at the time of her death and only her inner circle knew that she'd been hospitalized. The actress landed the role of Elena Ledesma for two seasons on the British series Fortitude in 2015, working alongside Stanley Tucci, Dennis Quaid and Michael Gambon.
Echegui later starred in the Netflix series Apaches in 2017 and later the FX drama Trust in 2018 alongside Donald Sutherland and Hilary Swank. The actress' last credited role was the rom-com Love You to Death, which debuted in February.
Actor Antonio Banderas was among Echegui's colleagues to pay tribute to her following news of her death.
"Today Spanish cinema is mourning the death of Veronica Echegui. My condolences to his family, friends. 🙏," Banderas wrote in a translated post.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez also shared a post paying tribute to Echegui.
"I was deeply shocked by the news of Verónica Echegui's passing, an actress with enormous talent and humility who leaves us far too young. My sincere embrace in these such difficult moments for the entire family and friends," Sánchez wrote in a translated post.
