Ukraine has carried out a significant operation by detonating underwater explosives at the Kerch Bridge, which connects Russia to Crimea. The attack, claimed by Ukraine's SBU security service, has severely damaged the base of the bridge, a key logistical route for Russian forces. This operation follows a series of strategic strikes by Ukraine, including a recent drone raid on Russia's strategic bomber fleet.

The Kerch Bridge, opened by President Vladimir Putin in 2018, has been a target for Ukraine since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022. This is the third time Ukraine has targeted the bridge. Previous attacks occurred in October 2022 and July 2023, with Russia repairing the damage each time. The latest strike involved over a metric tonne of TNT, according to the SBU.

Lt. Gen. Vasyl Maliuk of the SBU, who supervised the operation, emphasized the bridge's significance as a military target, stating, "Crimea is Ukraine, and any manifestations of occupation will receive our tough response." The attack temporarily halted road traffic on the bridge, with Russian authorities confirming a closure of about four hours.

The strike coincides with ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, as peace talks in Istanbul failed to produce a breakthrough. Russia rejected Ukraine's call for an unconditional ceasefire, instead proposing a partial truce. Meanwhile, Ukraine is seeking tougher sanctions against Russia, with Ukrainian officials visiting the United States to discuss defense support and battlefield conditions.
