"The N-Word Pass" in Lincoln Schools

According to a post on Facebook:

Lincoln Public Schools WE have to do something about these “N Word” passes students are passing out. A kid had one that said N Word Pass and it had a picture of Barack Obama smiling and giving a thumbs up with his signature on it! Lincoln has no regard or respect for Black Culture and this continues to expose that. Also, most of LPS are white children so why do they need to be saying that word for? They KNOW it’s wrong so they try giving themselves a pass which to me is symbolic of the white privilege that surrounds the United States of America. Just know if I see a kid of ANY RACE with an N Word Pass they are going to get a major life/history lesson!#nocap#norespectforblackculture#norespectforblackstruggle

The passes were apparently handed out at Lincoln North Star, prompting this message from the school's principal yesterday:

North Star Families,

We want to make you aware of an incident at North Star today. We were alerted today by a concerned citizen about a social media post involving a student reportedly handing out stickers with an offensive message that is circulating nationally as a meme. We immediately started investigating the report and did find a student had distributed a few stickers before school to a limited number of their friends. We have since confiscated the small number of stickers and the students will face appropriate consequences for their actions. I want to assure you that this type of material will not be tolerated in our school, and does not reflect our values and mission at North Star.If you have any concerns, please feel free to contact the school.

Ryan Zabawa

Principal, North Star High School
