Space scientists have been able to detect so-called “fast radio bursts” or FRBs from deep space for about 10 years. Now, NBC News reports, new techniques using artificial intelligence have helped them determine that these bursts are far more frequent than thought, and they are coming from a source in a galaxy far, far away. That is, it’s three billion light-years from Earth.

The scientists on the project, called Breakthrough Listen, are looking for patterns in the signals that might indicate whether the source is intelligent life or some other phenomenon.
