The Vatican announced yesterday that it will stop selling cigarettes in its duty-free shop and supermarket, voluntarily giving up some $11 million a year in profits.
Pope Francis made the decision, according to the Vatican, because, quote, "the Holy See cannot contribute to an activity that clearly damages the health of people."
Only Vatican employees, retirees, residents, diplomats and members of religious congregations have the right to have what's called a "commercial card" that allows them to buy things in the Vatican's duty-free shops.
