Trump Tweets Will 'Demand' Justice Dept. Investigate FBI
President Trump tweeted yesterday that he will today, quote, "demand" that the Justice Department investigate whether the FBI infiltrated his presidential campaign. In an extraordinary move pressuring the Justice Department, Trump said: "I hereby demand, and will do so officially tomorrow, that the Department of Justice look into whether or not the FBI/DOJ infiltrated or surveilled the Trump Campaign for Political Purposes - and if any such demands or requests were made by people within the Obama Administration!"
The Justice Department later in the day asked its inspector general to expand an existing investigation of the FBI's actions in the Russia probe to look at whether there was any improper politically motivated surveillance. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who is overseeing Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, said in a statement: "If anyone did infiltrate or surveil participants in a presidential campaign for inappropriate purposes, we need to know about it and take appropriate action."
Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff, the senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, called Trump's claim of an embedded spy "nonsense," saying, "His 'demand' DOJ investigate something they know to be untrue is an abuse of power, and an effort to distract from his growing legal problems."
