(Des Moines, IA) -- The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services is changing what can be purchased with food assistance benefits in an effort to promote healthier eating across the state.
Starting January 1st, items like soda, candy, and sugary drinks with less than 50-percent fruit juice will no longer be eligible for purchase with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP. The new rules will align SNAP-eligible items with Iowa's existing non-taxable food list.
In a statement, HHS Director Kelly Garcia said the change is about building a stronger, healthier Iowa for future generations.
She added that as obesity and chronic illness continue to rise, the state is taking bold steps to focus on prevention.
The department says it is working with both retailers and SNAP recipients to prepare for the rollout.
