(Des Moines, IA) -- Iowa is joining eight other states in opposing one of the largest business mergers in U.S. history.
In a letter to the Surface Transportation Board, the nine states are asking for a review of a proposed merger between Union Pacific Railroad and Norfolk Southern Railroad.
The states say they want to ensure the deal doesn't hurt farmers or manufacturers by raising prices and lowering reliability.
The 85-billion dollar deal would create America's first transcontinental railroad company.
It would be the fifth largest merger in U.S. business history.
