(Iowa) -- Soybean farmers in Iowa are encouraged China has agreed to start purchasing their crops again, but say that's just one step in helping them thrive.

"We need trade deals around the world. We are constantly working with the U.S Soy Export Council to diversify our markets with other countries," said Tom Adam, President of the Iowa Soybean Association.

Adam added that in the near term, Iowa farmers need a new Farm Bill. The current bill was extended from 2018 and new legislation is being negotiated by Congress.

He says farmers also need a new US Renewable Fuel Standard, which provides market and financial support for crops used to produce renewable fuels.

China has pledged to buy 12-million metric tons of U-S soybeans this year and twice as much annually over the next three years.

Adam made his comments to Jeff Angelo on 1040 AM, WHO Radio.
