(Lincoln, NE) -- Fines for speeding are increasing in Nebraska next week. The fines for driving over 20 mph over the posted speed limit are increasing by $100.

Driving double the speed limit will now be classified as Reckless Driving.

If workers are present in work zones, the fines can double. The same is true for school crossing zones. Court costs are also added to each citation.

It's a part of LB530 passed by the Unicameral and goes into effect next Wednesday, September 3.

New fine structure (old fine):

-- 1–5 mph over: $50 ($10) + court costs

-- 6–10 mph over: $75 ($25) + court costs

-- 11–15 mph over: $125 ($75) + court costs

-- 16–20 mph over: $200 ($125) + court costs

-- 21–35 mph over: $300 ($200) + court costs

-- 36+ mph over: $400 ($300) + court costs

Work zones begin at the first sign and end only when signage indicates. If workers are present anywhere inside the zone, fines can be doubled.
