(Des Moines, IA) -- A new report ranks Iowa number one in the nation again for the number of bridges in poor condition.

The Iowa Department of Transportation says 20-percent of the state's bridges--about 4,400 out of 23,500--are listed as poor, or low-rated, based on assessments by the Federal Highway Administration.

Jim Nelson, a Director of Bridges & Structures with the Iowa DOT says poor doesn't mean dangerous.

He says the state has brought down the number of poor bridges on primary routes in the state from 237 to 28.
