Omaha Mayor Supports Ice, Calls For Comprehensive Immigration Policy

(Omaha, NE) -- After an immigration raid at an Omaha business, and another investigation by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at a local restaurant, Omaha Mayor John Ewing says he supports ICE enforcement, but says immigration policies need improved.

"I don't have a problem with ICE removing violent criminals from our community." Omaha Mayor John Ewing said.

"I've never been critical of ICE as much as I've been critical of the policy that doesn't create a comprehensive immigration plan."

On June 10 ICE raided Glenn Valley Foods, a food processing plant in South Omaha, with a federal search warrant. Seventy-six employees were detained on suspicion of using fraudulent or stolen identification to gain employment.

On June 13 Fernando's Restaurant posted on social media that it received a subpoena from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security asking for employees' documentation. Fernando's says, by law, the restaurant had to let go any employees whose documentation failed to meet legal employment standards. The restaurant was closed until they can replace the lost staff.

Fernando's has two Omaha locations. At 114th and Dodge and 75th and Pacific Street.

Mayor Ewing was interviewed by Gary Sadlemyer and Jim Rose on KFAB's Morning News.
