(Iowa) -- Gender identity will be officially removed as a protected class under the Iowa Civil Rights Code beginning next week.

The Iowa Civil Rights Code protects Iowans against discrimination in housing, employment, education, credit, and public accommodations. Gender identity was added as a protected class in 2007. Iowa is the first state to take away civil protections from a previously protected group.

The law goes into effect July 1.
