Prison Caseworker Remains In Intensive Care After Brutal Attack

LINCOLN, Nebraska - Nebraska Department of Corrections caseworker Santino Akot remains in intensive care after a brutal beating over the weekend. On Saturday night, officials say Akot was knocked unconscious and suffered a number of strikes to his head. One friend tells 6 News that Akot hasn't opened his eyes since the attack.

Akot arrived in the United States in 2001 and was one of the Lost Boys of Sudan. His wife and children live in Uganda and money he earns working for the Department of Corrections is sent to support them. A go-fund-me account has been set up to help with expenses.

Another caseworker was injured in the attack and continues to recover.

6 News identified the accused inmate as 25 year old Joshua Collins. He is serving a 5 to 10 year sentence for a North Platte armed robbery. He was eligible for parole in October.

The assault happened at the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln but Collins has already been moved to Tecumseh. Reports show that Collins was caught with a homemade weapon last summer.

The Nebraska State Patrol is conducting the investigation. Further charges against Collins will be determined by the Lancaster County Attorney.
