Iowa Senate Passes Bill To Protect Teachers From Violent Students

The Iowa Senate has unanimously passed a bill aimed at helping teachers handle classroom violence.

State Senator Amy Sinclair's bill calls for more standards, guidelines, and protections for teachers. It also limits the practice of clearing an entire classroom, when one student is out of control.

The bill also calls for a grant program, to help districts pay for an alternative setting for students. Sinclair calls it a first step in helping teachers and she hopes to expand funding in the future.

The bill won unanimous support in the Republican-controlled Senate, although some Democrats say it doesn' t go far enough. It now moves to the House chamber.
