NFL legend Jason Witten has been named the Oklahoma Sooners' new tight ends coach, Sooner Scoop's Georgia Stoia and On3.com's Pete Nakos reported on Thursday (January 8).

Witten, who is a finalist for the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame class, has never coached at the collegiate level, but worked as the head coach at Liberty Christian School since his retirement from his playing career in 2021, leading the program to two consecutive state championships in 2023 and 2024. The 43-year-old will join former Dallas Cowboys teammate DeMarco Murray, who works as the team's running backs coach, on Brent Venables' Oklahoma staff.

Witten was selected by the Cowboys at No. 69 overall in the third-round of the 2003 NFL Draft and spent 16 seasons -- coming out of retirement in 2019 -- of his 17 seasons with the franchise, holding the records for career receptions (1,215), receiving yards (12,977) and receiving touchdowns (72). The former University of Tennessee standout was a two-time first-team All-Pro, a two-time second-team All-Pro, an 11-time Pro Bowler and the 2012 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year.

Witten spent his final NFL season with the Las Vegas Raiders before retiring in 2021 and is in his first year of eligibility for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
