The Douglas County Health Department has identified three mosquito pools that tested positive for mosquito-borne viruses through the county's routine mosquito surveillance program.
One pool tested positive for West Nile virus, while two additional pools tested positive for Jamestown Canyon virus.
No human cases have been reported in Douglas County in 2026.
Douglas County Health says residents can help protect themselves by:
• Using an Environmental Protection Agency-registered insect repellent.
• Wearing long sleeves and pants, especially at dawn and dusk.
• Draining standing water around homes where mosquitoes breed.
Most people infected with West Nile virus or Jamestown Canyon virus experience mild illness or no symptoms.
However, anyone who develops severe symptoms, including a high fever, severe headache, stiff neck, confusion, weakness or seizures, should seek medical attention.
The Douglas County Health Department will continue mosquito surveillance.
