Fatal Omaha Police - Kidnap Suspect Encounter Investigated

An investigation continues into a fatal officer- involved shooting that happened around 9:15 Tuesday morning at the Walmart at 72nd and Pine Streets in Omaha.

No officers were injured.

Police rushed to the scene after Douglas County 911 Communications took a call on an incident at the Walmart.

Officers quickly arrived and began giving commands to a woman they confronted outside the store who was holding a knife to a 3-year- old male in a shopping cart.

Deputy Omaha Police Chief Scott Gray says the woman began "swiping" at the child, causing a facial wound.

One or more officers then opened fire, killing the woman.

The child is expected to survive after being taken to a hospital for treatment of cuts to the face and hand.

Gray says the suspect was armed with a knife she took from the store.

It does not appear that the suspect and a woman caring for the child knew each other.
