Arrest In Suspected Omaha Animal Torture Case

Freddy Garcia Jr.

The Nebraska Humane Society and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office team up to arrest a man in connection with a suspected animal torture case in southeast Omaha.

In a news release Monday, the Sheriff's Office says late last month, the Nebraska Humane Society received a complaint from a good samaritan outlining concerns for the well-being of dogs in the area of 21st and Vinton Streets.

The complaint contained numerous videos depicting a man kicking, punching, and choking at least three different dogs.

Video also shows the male throwing the dogs across the yard, swinging them in circles by their leash which is attached to a neck collar, and slamming the dogs violently into the ground.

One of the dogs, Apollo, a 10-year-old gray Chihuahua, was brought to NHS deceased in late January.

After reviewing the footage, NHS contacted Sheriff's officials for assistance investigating the individual in the video.

The investigation identified the male in the video as 22-year-old Freddy Garcia Jr.

On March 5th, the DCSO Special Operations Group and Criminal Investigations Division in conjunction with the NHS Animal Control Investigators served a search warrant on Garcia’s residence. The warrant resulted in the seizure of:

• Three dogs

• Three guinea pigs

• One bearded dragon

• An assortment of fish

Two cats were later turned over to the Humane Society.

Last Friday, DCSO investigators arrested Garcia Jr. on three charges of intentional torture, mutilation, or beating of an animal (Felony IIIA).
