Blizzard Warning Issued For Most Of Iowa This Weekend

(Des Moines, IA) -- A powerful winter storm has prompted the National Weather Service to issue a blizzard warning for most of Iowa from Sunday through Monday morning.

Widespread snow will fall across Iowa, with higher amounts of six or more inches in the north and east.

Two to five inches of snow is expected in portions of central, south central, southwest, and west central Iowa.

Wind gusts of 55-65 miles an hour are expected, making travel dangerous or even impossible.

Precipitation will begin as rain Sunday morning before turning all to snow.

The blizzard warning went into effect at 7am Sunday for the north and eastern counties until 7am Monday. The blizzard warning for central Iowa begins at 1 pm Sunday through 7 am Monday.

The National Weather Service says travel should be restricted to emergencies only. If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you.
