(Omaha, NE) -- An illegal immigrant convicted of hitting and killing an Iowa woman in a south Omaha traffic crash in 2016 is sentenced to prison.

A Douglas County, Nebraska District Court Judge sentences Eswin Mejia to 20 to 22 years for motor vehicle homicide and flight to avoid arrest.

The crash took the life of 21-year -old Sarah Root of Council Bluffs.

Mejia had pleaded guilty to a charge of failure to appear and no contest to motor vehicle homicide.

Investigators said Mejia was drunk and street racing when his vehicle rear-ended Sarah Root's car at a stoplight.

Mejia had fled to Honduras after posting bail and was arrested there last year.

The case made international headlines and led to passage of the federal "Sarah's Law, " that holds illegal immigrants accused of killing or seriously injuring someone.
