(Omaha, NE) -- Arrests are made in what the Douglas County Sheriff's Office calls a new and emerging gang.
Saturday morning at 3:54, near North 99th and Blair High Road, a Douglas County Road Patrol Deputy conducted a traffic stop on a 2024 black Chevrolet Trax for careless driving.
Three people were in the vehicle, the driver Kapaw HTOO, age 30, and passengers Kyaw PWA, age 22, and a 17-year-old juvenile male, a known ‘K-Fam’ gang member. The driver, HTOO, showed signs of impairment and open containers were observed in plain sight. The vehicle was searched and DUI testing performed on the driver. Deputies seized the following:
• Multiple open alcohol containers
• Springfield .40 caliber handgun
• Walther 9mm handgun that was reported stolen in Omaha
• Modified AR-15 style pistol with the serial numbers removed
• Glock 80% polymer style ‘ghost gun’ with a fully automatic switch and no serial numbers
• A spent .40 caliber shell casing
• Black ski masks
• Black gloves.
A press release states that all three occupants were transported to the DCSO Law Enforcement Center for questioning and subsequently booked on the following charges:
Kapaw HTOO (driver):
• Careless driving
• DUI .15+ (2nd offense)
• Possession of a stolen firearm
• Possession of a fully automatic firearm
• Concealed carry - failure to disclose
Kyaw PWA:
• Possession of a stolen firearm
• Possession of a fully automatic firearm
• Concealed carry - failure to disclose
17-year-old Juvenile:
• Possession of a stolen firearm
• Possession of a fully automatic firearm
• Concealed carry - failure to disclose
• Unlawful possession of a firearm by a juvenile offender
DCSO notes that the ‘K-Fam’ gang is a generally new and emerging gang which primarily focuses on individuals who are refugees from Myanmar and Thailand.
Douglas County Sheriff Aaron Hanson said, “Gang challenges persist in the quickly growing Irvington area of Unincorporated Douglas County. DCSO deputies are routinely encountering members of the ‘K-Fam’ gang, a refugee gang based in Douglas County, in possession of weapons and committing serious felony crimes. Any member of our refugee community who is concerned about their children be coerced into gang activity can contact the DCSO Refugee Liaison at DCSOLiaisons@douglascounty-ne.gov or at https://sheriff.douglascounty-ne.gov/services/community-liaisons/ to discuss public safety and gang intervention resources that are available.”
