(Des Moines, IA) -- Iowa Auditor of State Rob Sand and his family were victims of a break-in over the holiday. Police say a homeless man broke into the Sand family’s Des Moines home on Friday while they were out of town. Investigators say 41-year-old Jeffrey Moffett stayed in the house until Sunday and was still there when the family returned.
Authorities report Moffett was wearing a family member’s clothes and refused to leave. He is charged with burglary, interfering with a police officer during the arrest, and causing injury. Moffett is being held in the Polk County Jail.
Statement from Auditor Sand regarding the incident on 11/30/25:
“My family and I came home from Thanksgiving travels to find an intruder in our house. Our family is safe. The prompt assistance from law enforcement is one more thing for which our family is thankful.”
