Omaha Zoo Mourns Over Loss Of Beloved Giraffe

On its Facebook page, Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium announces the death of a member of its giraffe family.

"Our Zoo family is mourning the loss of Zola, a beloved member of our giraffe herd whose gentle nature captured the hearts of many. Yesterday, after facing chronic gastrointestinal issues, the difficult but compassionate decision was made to humanely euthanize her when her quality of life had declined despite extensive care and treatment efforts.

Zola touched the lives of both our care teams and guests. She was known for her gentle nature and eagerness to participate in her own care, including transabdominal ultrasounds to help monitor the fetal development of her calf, Hope. Zola’s frequent interactions at Giraffe Encounter made her a favorite among guests.

Many will also remember Zola’s artistic side. She was a pro at painting, creating more than 470 giraffe hoof paintings since 2017. Her artwork has raised more than $20,000 to support conservation and professional development for our animal care teams. If you have a giraffe hoof print hanging in your home, there’s a good chance Zola was the artist behind it.

Zola’s legacy will live on as an ambassador for our Zoo and her species through her art and her close connections with guests and her care team. Her presence — both on habitat and in the hearts of those who cared for her — will be deeply missed."
