Drama on the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge as firefighters deal with a person threatening to jump.
Omaha firefighters and police responded to a rescue call Wednesday morning on the bridge where a person was found on the underside of the structure, hanging onto beams, threatening to jump.
Omaha Fire Battalion Chief Kurt Theiler tells KFAB Radio News firefighters originally tried to develop a rapport with the man, which didn't work as he started to move around with the possible intention of going under the bridge.
With concern the man was getting tired, two firefighters in safety gear went over the railing onto the beam to grab him and pull him to safety
Theiler says boats from Omaha Fire, the airport, and Council Bluffs Fire were in the water during the rescue.
The man was taken to a hospital and emergency protective custody.
The Omaha Fire Department salutes the cooperation from the Omaha Police Department's Drone Team for their support and collaboration, along with neighboring agencies.
