(Lincoln, NE) -- Nebraska has the most overcrowded prison system in the U.S. according to the new 2025 report from The Inspector General of the state Correctional System.
Doug Koebernick says Nebraska ranks first in prison overcrowding when measured by operational capacity.
Alabama is first in overcrowding measured by design capacity.
Nebraska's prison overcrowding got worse after nearly 400 prisoners had to be moved to other Department of Corrections facility gymnasiums and other temporary quarters after the Nebraska State Penitentiary was damaged in storms this summer.
