A Virginia man is facing charges of attempted first-degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding after allegedly setting a Danville City Council member on fire. The incident occurred on July 30, when Shotsie Michael Buck-Hayes reportedly poured gasoline on Lee Vogler and ignited him inside his office at Showcase Magazine.
During a preliminary hearing on Tuesday (September 30), Danville Police Sergeant Gerrit Clay testified that Buck-Hayes admitted to setting Vogler on fire, claiming Vogler had an affair with his wife. However, the truth of this allegation remains unclear.
Vogler, 38, sustained severe injuries, with third-degree burns covering 60% of his body. His wife, Blair Vogler, testified that doctors had to use an additional 35% of his skin to treat the burns, leading to infections and complications such as pneumonia. Vogler has undergone multiple surgeries and faces a long recovery.
Buck-Hayes allegedly purchased $3 worth of gasoline before the attack, intending to kill Vogler. Witness Steven Seiple testified that he saw Vogler running from Buck-Hayes, who was carrying a bucket of gasoline. Vogler's shirt was burned off, and his body was severely injured.
The case will proceed to a grand jury on October 27. If convicted, Buck-Hayes could face a life sentence. He is currently held without bail in Danville City Jail. The community has rallied in support of Vogler, with fundraisers and prayers for his recovery.
