Iowa Strips Des Moines Superintendent Of License After His Arrest By ICE

(Des Moines, IA) -- Des Moines School Superintendent Ian Roberts has been stripped of his job title by the state of Iowa. Roberts was taken into ICE custody on Friday on charges that he was in the U-S illegally.

The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners sent a letter to Roberts on Sunday, saying his authority to serve as superintendent is revoked.

The letter states Roberts can appeal the decision, which comes a day after the Des Moines School Board voted to place him on paid leave.

The Department of Homeland Security says Roberts fled from law enforcement in his vehicle on Friday. DHS says Roberts, a native of Guyana, had a final order of removal against him issued last year after his work visa expired in 2020 He came to the U.S. on a student visa in 1999.

He remains held in ICE custody.
