Iowa DOT Plans To Phase Out Funny Traffic Message Signs After Labor Day

(Des Moines, IA) -- Those funny, clever Iowa DOT message boards are going away after Labor Day.

The Iowa Department of Transportation began displaying humorous messages in 2012, and they quickly became a hit. At one point, the DOT even invited the public to submit their own ideas for the witty signs. Phrases like “Get your head out of your apps, drive safely” and “That’s the temperature, not the speed limit” sparked conversation and smiles.

“I think they are very clever. I like the funny ones,” said Judy Peterson.

“I do too, and I think they serve a purpose,” added Merrill Brendalin.

In late 2023, the U.S. Department of Transportation issued new rules for standard highway signage, calling for straightforward traffic and safety messages. Some argue the humorous signs were more distracting than helpful.

The Iowa DOT tells our newsroom there’s no evidence the funny messages improve safety, and they require extra staff time and effort. Instead of clever signs, the department is shifting resources toward more practical and proven methods.

After Labor Day, the signs will display only direct traffic messages, without the humor.

The department declined an interview but confirmed the change is coming.
