(Des Moines, IA) -- As the 4th of July approaches, the Animal Rescue League of Iowa is offering tips to keep your pets safe.
The ARL says pets frightened by fireworks may flee their homes.
The organization recommends ensuring your pet has proper ID tags, and suggest having them fitted with a microchip registered with your current information.
Here are a few more tips...
Create a quiet, secure space.
Designate a safe room in your home where your pet can relax. Interior rooms or basements are best to help muffle loud sounds. Fill the space with familiar items—like their bed or toys—and consider staying with them during the height of the fireworks.
Keep your home sealed.
Doors, windows, and curtains should be kept closed to minimize noise and reduce the chance of escape.
Use background noise.
Having the TV or radio on during fireworks can help mask the sound of explosions.
Consider calming aids.
Products such as calming sprays, anti-anxiety collars, and compression shirts.
Consult your veterinarian.
For pets with more severe anxiety, short-term anxiety medications may be appropriate.
Be prepared in case your pet gets lost.
Review the ARL Lost & Found Pets page to know what steps to take if a pet goes missing or if you find a stray animal.
