Omaha Police Issue Statement On County Inmate Death

Omaha Police issue a statement on their arrest of a man, who later died after being found unresponsive in his medical unit cell at Douglas County Corrections:

"The Omaha Police Department is aware of a video circulating on social media related to the arrest of Edward Henry, 54, on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, and his subsequent death in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The arrest was captured on multiple body-worn cameras (BWC) as well as by witness cellphone footage. Chief Todd Schmaderer has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

Preliminary Review of Body-Worn Camera Footage:

-- BWC footage shows Mr. Henry was in the process of having his handcuffs switched when he suddenly grabbed the rear window bars of the cruiser.

-- Multiple officers and two supervisors were present on scene.

-- The only hand strikes observed on BWC were directed at Mr. Henry’s wrist area in an effort to make him release his grip from the cruiser window bars.

-- Mr. Henry was taken to the ground and re-handcuffed. While on the ground, no strikes of any kind were delivered to his head or body.

-- No officers were on his back, and no neck restraint was used during the incident.

-- After approximately 20 seconds on the ground, Mr. Henry was stood up and continued to yell.

-- A standard medical assessment was conducted upon his arrival at the corrections facility.

-- An autopsy will be conducted, which is expected to provide further clarity regarding the cause and manner of death.

'Transparency and accountability are essential to maintaining public trust,' said Chief Todd Schmaderer.

'There are two separate investigations (OPD's and the corrections in-custody death investigation) in the early stages. OPD is conducting a thorough review of all available evidence—including body-worn camera footage, citizen videos, and witness statements.'

The Omaha Police Department extends its sincere condolences to Mr. Henry’s family and friends during this difficult time. Members of the OPD Executive and Senior Command Staff met with Mr. Henry’s family today to explain the investigative process and personally offer their support.

The Omaha Police Department is asking any independent witnesses who may have observed or recorded the arrest of Mr. Henry, please contact us at 402-444-4877. Please reference Report Number: AU67699 when calling. Your information could be valuable to the ongoing investigation."
