(Des Moines, IA) -- Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate has announced he is running for re-election.

The Republican made the announcement in a Facebook post on Saturday, stating that he is seeking his fifth term in office. Pate is a Cedar Rapids native and has previously served as the city's mayor and as a state legislator. He served as Iowa’s Secretary of State from 1995 to 1999 and returned to the role in 2015.

Democrat and Bettendorf native Ryan Peterman announced his candidacy for Secretary of State in May.

If Pate is not re-elected, his current term will end in 2027.
