(Des Moines, IA) -- A state task force is floating the idea of reducing the number of counties in Iowa.
The Iowa DOGE Task Force--which shares the government efficiency goals of its federal counterpart--raised the idea during a meeting in Des Moines Wednesday.
Some task force members say consolidation of some of Iowa's 99 counties could save money allowing for property tax cuts.
The team also brought up consolidating rural school districts as rural populations continue to decline.
The Task Force says they plan to make bold recommendations to Governor Reynolds to improve government efficiency.
They'll hold their third of four planned meetings in August.
