Nebraska First to Ban Soda, Energy Drinks from SNAP Benefits

(LINCOLN, NE) -- Nebraska will become the first state to ban soda and energy drinks from SNAP benefits starting Jan. 1, under a newly approved federal waiver.

Governor Jim Pillen says the change is part of an effort to promote healthier food choices among families receiving public assistance. SNAP recipients will still be able to purchase other grocery items, but sugary drinks will no longer be eligible.

Several other states, including Iowa and Kansas, are considering similar restrictions.
