(Des Moines, IA) -- Cities in Iowa will need to get rid of boards that oversee police under a new law.
Citizen police review boards generally provide more sets of eyes on allegations of police misconduct and make recommendations to the city, though they have no real power to take action. Supporters of the bill say it protects police from political interventions, while opponents say the boards help improve relationships between communities and their police departments. At least six Iowa cities will have to dissolve a board that falls under the definition. Senate File 311 was one of 25 bills Governor Reynolds signed into law on Monday.
