(Lincoln, NE) — A bill that would have expanded SNAP benefits for individuals with drug-related felonies has been vetoed by Governor Jim Pillen.
Legislative Bill 319, which was approved by the Nebraska Legislature, aimed to remove the current lifetime ban on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) for people convicted of certain drug-related offenses.
Governor Pillen stated that individuals who distribute or sell illicit drugs should not be eligible for taxpayer-funded benefits.
Supporters of the bill argued that removing the lifetime ban would support rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
