Newark Liberty International Airport experienced a radar outage on April 28, causing significant delays and cancellations. Audio recordings reveal the tense moments when air traffic controllers lost radar and radio communications with planes. The outage led to widespread disruptions, with flights departing over two hours late on average. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) cited staffing shortages, weather, and construction as contributing factors.

The outage lasted about 30 seconds but had a cascading effect, resulting in a weeklong disruption at one of the nation's largest airports. At least five air traffic controllers took trauma leave following the incident. Despite the brief blackout, no accidents occurred, but the situation highlighted the challenges of an outdated air traffic control system.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy acknowledged the severity of the issue, stating that the FAA is working to overhaul the system. Mediaite reported that the outage has compounded existing staffing shortages and equipment failures, leading to ongoing delays. The FAA has announced a ground delay for inbound flights, further affecting passengers.

The incident has sparked renewed scrutiny on the air traffic control system, with calls for modernization to prevent future disruptions. The FAA expects delays to continue due to staffing shortages, and efforts to restore full capacity at Newark Airport are ongoing.
