(Omaha, NE) -- The Omaha City Council has passed an ordinance to increase penalties for street racing.

The new ordinance raises first-time penalties to a fine of up to $250 and up to 30 days in jail. Spectators can also be fined for their involvement, with fines ranging from $100 for the first violation to $350 for the third. Section 36-232 grants authorized personnel the right to tow vehicles of those accused of violating the ordinance.

The ordinance aims to address the dangers of street racing, which has led to numerous accidents and fatalities in Omaha. In 2024, Omaha Police responded to over 170 serious injury accidents and 59 traffic deaths.

The City Council passed the ordinance unanimously, seven to zero.
