The Omaha Police Department’s Officer-Involved Investigations Team, along with the Nebraska State Patrol and the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating an officer-involved shooting Sunday evening that resulted in one person injured.
Omaha Police say officers responded to numerous 911 calls reporting an armed male firing shots inside Florence Tower, 5100 Florence Boulevard.
The suspect was reported to be on the sixth floor with firearms.
Officers made their way to the sixth floor using both the stairwell and the elevator.
As officers ascended the stairwell, active gunfire could be heard.
At the sixth-floor stairwell doorway, officers encountered an armed male, later identified as 50-year- old Billy Dorrall.
Gunfire was exchanged, and one officer fired a service weapon in the direction of Dorrall, who then retreated further into the sixth floor.
As officers entered the hallway, they found a deceased male, identified as 45-year- old Eric Bechtolt.
Investigators say Dorrall was found down a hallway, in possession of two handguns and suffering from a non-life- threatening gunshot wound.
Police say officers gave verbal commands, with which Dorrall complied, and he was taken into custody.
The investigation reveals Dorrall shot and killed Eric Bechtolt during a disturbance before officers arrived.
Dorrall was taken to Nebraska Medicine by Omaha Fire Paramedics for treatment.
He has been booked for first-degree murder, attempted second degree murder, attempted first degree assault, three counts of use of a weapon to commit a felony, and felon in possession of a firearm.
The Douglas County Attorney’s Office will review the reports for formal charges.
OPD says portions of the incident were captured on officers’ body-worn cameras.
The officers involved have been placed on paid critical incident leave per department policy and standard operating procedure.
They will be interviewed in the coming days.
