The Omaha Police Narcotics Unit identifies the presence of carfentanil within the Omaha Metro Area.
They say carfentanil is a highly potent synthetic opioid, approximately 10,000 times stronger than morphine and 100 times more potent than fentanyl.
Police say its emergence in local drug markets is extremely concerning, as even minimal exposure can lead to fatal overdoses, including among opioid-tolerant individuals.
OPD says recently, carfentanil has been detected in the form of M-30 blue pills, but it may also appear as a liquid or powder resembling cocaine or heroin.
Carfentanil is legally used as a tranquilizer for large animals, such as elephants and rhinoceroses, under the brand name Wildnil.
Given the severe risks associated with carfentanil, Omaha Police urge the public to be aware of the following:
-- Extreme Overdose Risk – Due to its potency, overdose symptoms can occur rapidly and may be more difficult to reverse.
-- Naloxone (Narcan) Use – In suspected overdose cases, multiple doses (possibly 6-8) of Naloxone may be required to counteract the effects.
If you suspect any exposure to fentanyl-related substances, including carfentanil, call 911 immediately and seek medical attention.
