The Drug Enforcement Administration Omaha Division says the first life sentence in the federal DIstrict of Nebraska for distribution of fentanyl resulting in death was given today.

In 2022, investigators say 29-year old Michael Reis sold fake pills (fentanyl) which were in turn picked up and ingested by a four-year-old, who overdosed and died.

Law enforcement says the child was found unresponsive in a northwest Omaha apartment and later died after CPR efforts.

It was found the child had died from fentanyl poisoning.

Investigators say Reis had sold pills to the child's mother.

The mother is on probation.

The DEA’s overdose response task force made up of DEA agents, the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Nebraska State Patrol, and Omaha Police conducted the investigation.

Reis was also sentenced today to a life sentence for sex trafficking a teen minor.
