The Nebraska State Historical Society says slippery conditions on the exterior of the Nebraska State Capitol have stopped the preparations to illuminate the Nebraska State Capitol in orange Thursday to honor the survivors and descendants of the Genoa Industrial School.
The NSHS says the commemorative lighting has been rescheduled to Thursday, Feb. 27th.
The Nebraska Legislature passed LR 280 designating Feb. 20th as the annual day of remembrance for those impacted by the Genoa Industrial School’s history and legacy.
The school was one of the boarding schools that forcibly assimilated Native American children into Western culture.
The color orange is associated with such boarding schools.
The school operated for 50 years, closing in 1934.
