(Des Moines, IA) -- Proposed legislation which would remove the residency requirement to receive in-state tuition for survivors of deceased veterans is advancing to the House of Representatives floor. House Study Bill 6 passed the Veterans Affairs Committee unanimously on Wednesday.
Rep. Elinor Levin (D-Iowa City) serves on the committee. She voted for the bill, but wants to see more details added before it advances to the floor.
"In this section of code, we specify those stationed at the Rock Island Arsenal which is on Iowa's border," Levin says. " It does not specify the Offutt Air Base, which is also on Iowa's border. I'd like us to make sure that we're taking care of our western border the same way we're taking care of our eastern border."
The bill can be tweaked before it heads to the House floor. Committee leaders promised to include that change, as well as clarify that survivors would include a dependent child or spouse of a deceased veteran.
