(Omaha, NE) -- A rat infestation near the recycling center at 39th and D Streets in South Omaha is drawing attention from Douglas County officials.
The Douglas County Health Department says they're working on a management plan, including putting bait out for the rodents.
According to a statement, the agency has inspected the area and was able to identify factors contributing to the infestation. They say they're working with restaurants and Waste Management to improve waste disposal practices near the recycling center, and to help coordinate in getting more garbage removed.
They're also asking residents to not leave pet food out, to cover all garbage cans and dumpsters, and also suggest practicing the following steps:
- Inspect the home for entry points (cracks, gaps, and exposed openings)
- Seal all gaps larger than a dime (for mice) or a quarter (for rats).
- For larger openings, wire mesh can be used
- Remove Potential Food Sources
- Clean up birdseed that falls on the ground.
- Use sealed compost bins.
- Eliminate Potential Shelter Areas
- Remove piles of leaves, wood, or construction debris.
- Trim overgrown vegetation.
- Store outdoor furniture indoors when not in use.
- Organize and reduce outdoor clutter.
The Health Department says rats pose significant health risks, including the potential spread of diseases such as leptospirosis, salmonellosis, and hantavirus. They can also damage property and contaminate food and water sources.
If active rat burrows are observed or if anyone needs assistance with implementing these measures, residents can contact the Douglas County Health Department at 402-444-7481.
