Kyle Ricke, the man convicted of shooting and killing Algona Police Officer Kevin Cram, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Wednesday morning.
"Your act was cowardly. It was heinous. It was reprehensible. It was beyond selfish, and it was immoral," said Judge Nancy Whittenburg before delivering the sentence on Wednesday.
Ricke was about to be arrested on a harassment warrant on September 13, 2023 by Officer Cram. He then shot Cram before fleeing to Minnesota, where he was taken into custody. Cram later died from his injuries.
Members of Officer Cram's family delivered victim impact statements Wednesday morning from the courtroom.
"Kevin was an excellent father, a loving husband, brother, grandson, and son that we are all proud of. No one will say any of those things about you," Kevin's father, Mark Cram said.
"Right now, I should be celebrating my wedding anniversary, but instead I'm here at his murder trial. You not only destroyed a family, and children's lives, but your own family, and an entire community with your selfishness," Kevin's wife, Lara Cram said.
Ricke will also have to pay $150,000 in restitution to Cram's family.
