Two teenage girls were killed in a jet ski accident at Lake Marie in Antioch, Michigan, on Tuesday (June 18). The Lake County Sheriff's Office said that a 16-year-old girl from California was operating a Yamaha jet ski while a 13-year-old rode as a passenger. The jet ski was traveling at a high rate of speed when it slammed into a Sea Ray Cabin Cruiser.
"It doesn't appear they avoided or tried to make any sharp maneuvers," Lake County Sheriff's Office Deputy Chief Chris Covelli told WPWR. "It appears they went straight into the cabin cruiser. Just seems to be a tragic, unfortunate accident."
The two girls, who were wearing life vests, were knocked unconscious and thrown into the water. The occupants of the boat rushed to help and pulled the girls out of the water.
The girls were rushed to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
"The driver of the cabin cruiser was certainly shaken up by the situation, as were the three passengers on board. They did immediately jump into action and do everything they could to save these girls' lives. Unfortunately, it didn't work out," Covelli added.
None of the four occupants in the boat were injured in the crash.
