Omaha Metro Area 'In-Custody' Death Investigated

Investigators say the Omaha Police "Officer Involved Investigations Team" is looking into an in-custody death involving Bellevue Police and the Nebraska State Patrol.

Police say late Wednesday night, Bellevue officers started a vehicle pursuit of a known wanted man with active felony warrants.

Investigators identify him as 33-year old Rashad D. Harris.

The pursuit began in Sarpy County, traveled through Council Bluffs, and ended in the area of 39th and Farnam Streets in Omaha.

Police say three Bellevue Police officers and a Nebraska State Patrol trooper were on the scene at the end of the pursuit when Rashad Harris was found deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot.

They say two firearms were found in the Harris vehicle.

The Omaha Police helicopter provided airborne surveillance, however no Omaha Police officers were directly involved.

The Bellevue Police Department, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, and Nebraska State Patrol are assisting with the investigation.

Nebraska law requires a grand jury investigate when a person dies in custody of, or while being apprehended by law enforcement.
