(Omaha, NE) -- Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium announces the name of its new elephant calf.
The zoo says the name Mopani was selected by the elephant keeper team. Mopani was born on March 2nd and was the third elephant calf born at the Henry Doorly Zoo. Sonny and Eugenia joined the herd in early 2022. Another elephant calf is expected in the late summer. Zoo leaders say the name Mopani came from the mopani tree, which elephants forage on and is native to southern Africa.
During Friday's name reveal, the zoo also announced that a fifth baby elephant is due early next year.
