Council Bluffs Police: Reckless motorcyclist hit by pickup truck

(Council Bluffs, IA) -- Council Bluffs Police say an 18 year old motorcyclist that was spotted driving recklessly, and had previously fled from police, was hit by a pickup truck over the weekend.

CBPD says just before 4:30 Saturday afternoon, an officer attempted to pull over two motorcycles on Frontage Road in the area of West Broadway and I-29. Police say when the officer turned on the cruiser’s lights and sirens, the two motorcycles drove off-road through an open field and fled the area. Investigators say the officer did not pursue them and shut off his emergency equipment, going back into service after losing sight of them. The last known sighting of the motorcycles by police was near 34th and Avenue A.

Police say then around 4:30, a crash involving a pickup truck and motorcycle was reported at 26th and Avenue E. Investigators say one of the motorcycles that failed to stop for police a few minutes prior, was involved in the crash. The motorcyclist hit, 18 year old Reese Schlotfeld, was taken to Nebraska Medicine with serious injuries.

CBPD says several witnesses came forward and told police that the motorcycles were seen driving recklessly on Broadway and driving through people’s yards at high rates of speed in the neighborhoods. Police say witnesses also reported that a black SUV, not a police cruiser, was seen in the area following the motorcycles at one point. The case is currently under investigation by the Council Bluffs Police Special Operations / Traffic Unit.

At this time police say there is no update on Schlotfeld’s condition, but charges are pending against him.

Anyone with information in reference to the owners / operator of the black SUV or other information in reference to this crash is urged to contact Council Bluffs Police at (712) 328-4948.
