(Omaha, NE) -- Big changes are coming to a historic South Omaha park.

The road through Mandan Park, just north of 13th and Harrison streets, will close traffic to vehicles indefinitely in the coming weeks in an attempt to deter crime and limit the areas that people will use for dumping trash.

The park will still be open to walking, hiking, and biking.

“You’ll be able to ride a bike, you’ll be able to walk, you’ll be able to take it in and enjoy it, but what will happen is that it will limit the areas that people will use for dumping,” says Vinny Palermo.

City councilman Vinny Palermo tells 6 News the city has cameras in the park which will hopefully deter people from engaging in crime in the area. Palermo says the city is looking for new ways to stop the issues surrounding Mandan Park.

Palermo did not offer a timeline on when the road will close, or for what length of time the road will stay closed.
